We are excited that we support the display of hieroglyphs on Egyptological. We are wondering how we should use this. Would you be interested in some introductory courses for example; or maybe somebody would like to use the functionality to write a Journal article about particular texts?
You can also use them within comments. It is easy. For a single symbol just use this format. It is like marking bold text on many forums.
[hieroglyph]anx[/hieroglyph] is the light version if you just want one symbol
You can also specify longer text or compound symbols [hieroglyph]p*(t:Z4):pt[/hieroglyph] using the Manuel de Codage format.
This is very new, so inevitably there will be some bugs in the display of more advanced texts. If you find problems, please contact us. It is very, very complex code so please bear in mind that fixes may take some time! It would be great if we can ease our way into this slowly. The goal however is to move towards supporting fully interactive discussion of hieroglyphs, and maybe of specific texts.
If you wish, you can also just put in the plain MDC like p:(t:Z4):pt but sometimes being able to display something like a King’s name is valuable. Now you can!

I have been studying hieroglyphs intermittently for the past two years. I also took a course from Dr. Perez-Accino and clearly recall his remark that hieroglyphs are “teflon”. How true that is! Unfortunately, working full time tends to interfere with my interests such hieroglyphs, making the subject even more non-stick. The upshot is that I get rusty in reading hieroglyphs very quickly. I realize that your course would be geared towards beginners, but frankly, I can always benefit from reviewing the basics of hieroglyphs. Please, count me in.
Hi Bruce. You are probably at around my level, and I feel exactly the same way about using beginner level courses as refresher courses. From my point of view they reinforce existing knowledge and may provide something new along the way.
Thanks for replying. It is very useful to get some idea of the sort of course that people would be looking for, so that it can be put together to meet as many needs as possible.

My knowledge of hieroglyphs is much better than a beginner but probably just short of intermediate. When I work on my flashcards I get to a point where I can walk around Egyptian temples and tombs and UK museums and translate texts very happily. The moment I slack, however, I forget just enough to make it a challenge to compose grammar with the appropriate words.
I went to a course many years ago with Dr José Pérez-Accino who described hieroglyphs as “teflon” (i.e. non stick) and I have always thought that he hit the nail on the head with that remark!
Learning hieroglyphs is a challenge but worth while. We are hoping to run a course here on Egyptological for beginners so if you feel that it is something you would like to do please let us know!
Good news. Now to learn the Gardner’s list in more detail. Will we have the option to “preview message” to check for errors?
Regards,
Stuart
I want a sandbox but it is a bit of a struggle so not from day one. Preview would be even better – and even harder.
Fantastic, Kate – they look super.
Or something shorter –
Just to prove you can use them in comments –
