Hieroglyphs

You may use hieroglyphs in your writing anywhere on the EO family of Websites, including within comments.  To enter a hieroglyph just place it within hieroglyph tags like this:

[hieroglyph]anx[hieroglyph] to display an ankh symbol.

The hieroglyph will be displayed when the page of viewed.  You may use any of the standard mnemonics or Gardiner codes; these are case sensitive, so consult our  tables of the Gardiner sign list if you are usure.  Here is an example of  how [hieroglyph]M15[hieroglyph] displays:

This simple version cannot (yet) handle rotation, shading (to indicate damage).  There are also still some quirks in the format but it can still manage reasonably sophisticated hieroglyphs like this:

[hieroglyph]z:A1*Z1-p-Z7-wn:n-i-n:p*Z7-E15-x:D43-Z7-Y1:n-A1-r:n-f-!sxt-t:Z4-A1-p*Z7:n-sxt-t:N23-H-mA-A-t-U32-N33:Z2-niwt-i-s-t-!wn:n-N42:t-B1:f-U7-r:t-A2-B1-r:n-s-![/hieroglyph]

Learning More

If you are interested in learning more about hieroglyphs, the Gardiner codes you should use to specify them, or our support for hieroglyphs on EO websites, please visit our Hieropaedia.

Hieroglyphs are displayed using the Hieroglyph WordPress plugin specially developed by Kate Phizackerley for the EO family of websites.   There is a User Guide if you would like to learn how to display more advanced hieroglyphs.

Legacy Option (using Glypheer)

We also offer, for legacy purposes, the  format [hieroglyphs]p*t:pt[hieroglyphs] (note the s in the tags) using Kate Phizackerley’s older Glypheer plugin which can display cartouches and fairly full Manuel de Codage as shown in the User Guide; however, this full parser makes heavy demands on the server and cannot handle cadrat groups (unlike the simpler version) and there should be little reason to use it. For a bit of fun, this version can also produce coloured glyphs like this:
